Work History

A few words about me.

I started delivering papers at the age of 14; those papers had to be on the porch by 6:00 am or we were in trouble.  After about a year of that, I started working for the Postal Telegraph, a then rival of Western Union, as a messenger boy.  I later became a teletype operator until Postal Telegraph merged with Western Union.

Prior to entering the Army Air Force, I worked at the Harlingen Army Air Gunnery School as a mechanic on various airplanes. I worked there for one year. I entered the Army Air Force in May 1943, and was discharged in 1946.  I served in the 2nd Air Force and the 3rd Air Force after completing my training on B-17s.  I worked primarily on B-17s and B-29s.  I took my training on B-17s at Amarillo, TX and on B-29s at Boeing Field in Seattle, Washington.

After being discharged, I started a career in Municipal work for the City of Edinburg, Texas.  I started out as a water plant operator, and later became Director of Utilities and Public Works.  While working full time, I attended night classes at the University of Pan American; it is now known as University of Texas at Pan American.  I received a BBA degree cum laude.

The City of Denton, Texas contacted me and offered me a better position, so I moved to Denton in early 1965 and served as Director of Public Works and Assistant City Manager for 14 years.  In 1979, I was offered the position of General Manager of the Trinity Bay Conservation District.  I moved to Anahuac, Texas in 1979 for three years.

In 1982 I was offered the position of City Manager of La Porte, Texas.  I served as City Manager for almost five years until I retired in late 1986.

After retiring, we moved to the beach full time, and sold our home in La Porte.  We had bought the beach house in 1974, and I have made many improvements to it since then.  I keep thinking of more things to do to it all the time.

Retired to Bolivar Peninsula!  I asked my wife if we should sell our home and move to the beach.  She said that if she ever wanted to see me, we had better move.  I was already spending most of my time there. Retired to Bolivar Peninsula!
This caricature of me was drawn by the husband of a  former secretary of mine in Denton, Texas.  His name is Bob Schmidt.  Bob could have made a very good living as a cartoonist.  He is, however, a mortician and owns a funeral home.  The writing on the "machine" says:  "The City Machine.  Do not tamper with."

I was Assistant City Manager at the time.
